What the habitat amount hypothesis does and does not predict: A reply to Saura

چکیده
Saura (2020) used the habitat amount hypothesis (HAH) to predict negative effects of fragmentation per se on mean species density site over a region. This prediction is valid but incomplete; HAH can also positive stated, "the compatible with steeper slope species–area relationship for fragmented than continuous habitat, and higher richness single large patch several small patches same total area (SLOSS)." Importantly, does not species-area (SAR) slopes or SLOSS. These require information about how composition changes space, while only predicts site. The therefore equally shallower SAR either outcome

Medicalisation and Overdiagnosis: What Society Does to Medicine
The concept of overdiagnosis is a dominant topic in medical literature and discussions. In research that targets overdiagnosis, medicalisation is often presented as the societal and individual burden of unnecessary medical expansion. In this way, the focus lies on the influence of medicine on society, neglecting the possible influence of society on medicine. In this perspective, we aim to provi...
متن کاملMistaking the Map for the Territory: What Society Does With Medicine; Comment on “Medicalisation and Overdiagnosis: What Society Does to Medicine”
Van Dijk et al describe how society’s influence on medicine drives both medicalisation and overdiagnosis, and allege that a major political and ethical concern regarding our increasingly interpreting the world through a biomedical lens is that it serves to individualise and depoliticize social problems. I argue that for medicalisation to serve this purpose, it would have to exclude the possibil...
متن کاملComplex Arterial and Venous Thrombosis in Polycythemia Vera: what Does Leukocytosis Predict?
Thromboembolic events represent the main cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with polycythemia vera. Leukocytosis has been identified as an important risk factor for development of vascular thrombosis. A 47-year-old woman with polycythemia vera presented with pain and swelling in her right calf. She was scheduled to receive anagrelide which was effective on polycythemia and thrombocyto...
متن کاملDoes meal duration predict amount consumed in lone diners? An evaluation of the time-extension hypothesis.
The time-extension hypothesis has been proposed to describe why social facilitation (the tendency for presence of co-eaters to increase the amount eaten) occurs amongst groups of diners. However, it is possible that time-extension could increase the amount eaten in the absence of social effects. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess whether prolonged exposure to a food environment with...
متن کاملReply: The Diastolic Pressure Gradient Does Not-and Should Not-Predict Outcomes.
Although pulmonary hypertension (PH) that occurs among patients with left heart disease (LHD) is the most prevalent form of PH, we have a very crude understanding of the range of pulmonary vascular responses to LHD and an even more rudimentary approach to its therapy. To better understand pathogenesis and develop effective targeted therapeutics, we need to refine our assessment of the pulmonary...
